Extra Care & Additional Handling Charges
At Goorooship, we always strive to provide our customers with clear and transparent pricing. However, some carriers may apply surcharges after pickup if a package requires special handling. These fees are determined and billed directly by the carrier, not by Goorooship.
Examples by Carrier
Canpar – “Extra Care” Charge
Canpar Express may apply an “Irregular” Extra Care charge to items that, due to their nature (shape, packaging, or contents), are not suitable for automated sorting facilities. This can include:
-
Liquids, pails, or containers not fully encased in proper packaging
-
Wooden or metal crates, strapped items, or non-conveyable packages
-
Shipments requiring re-packaging because of insufficient original packaging
UPS – “Additional Handling” Surcharge
UPS may apply an Additional Handling fee for packages that fall outside their standard processing guidelines. This often applies to:
-
Items with the longest side over 48 inches, or the second-longest side over 30 inches
-
Packages weighing more than 50 lbs
-
Non-standard packaging such as cylindrical tubes, buckets, or items not fully encased in a cardboard box
Other Carriers
FedEx, Purolator, and other carriers have similar rules for shipments that cannot move through their conveyor systems safely. These rules are set by the carrier, and the surcharge is applied at their discretion.
What This Means for You
-
Goorooship does not add or profit from these charges. We simply pass on the fees when carriers apply them.
-
These charges may not appear at the time of booking because they are assessed by the carrier after physical inspection of the package.
-
To minimize the risk of these surcharges, always use sturdy cardboard boxes, avoid straps or irregular packaging, and ensure items are properly sealed.
Need Help?
If you are ever billed an extra care or additional handling charge and believe it was applied incorrectly, please contact us at [email protected]. We will work with the carrier to request documentation and verify the charge.
Our goal is to ensure transparency and help our customers understand why these charges occur.
